The day I decided that the best way to celebrate my 35th birthday was to go out and take a vacation in my home city.
Located outside the major tourist routes in the city, Piazza San Silvestro has an ancient and glorious history. It contains a beautiful church and a former convent, now housing one of the most modern and advanced laboratories for nanotechnology research.
Urban trekking is an excellent way to discover the lesser-known parts of the most beautiful cities in Italy. It is a way to slow down and experience the local life and one of the most sustainable forms of tourism. Here is the program of the National Urban Trekking Day in Tuscany (October 31, 2009).
Pisa is said to be a “closed city” for the many walled gardens scattered throughout the center. Walking around, one cannot but notice trees and beautiful flowers suddenly peeping out from behind high walls in the tiny alleys of the oldest part of town.
I have just found about this amazing site. It’s called Arounder and it contains a selection of great 360° views of a lot of cities. Check the virtual tours of Florence and Pisa!
June is the best time of the year to visit Pisa, because all the major events are concentrated in this month. Luminara di San Ranieri is a must-see.
Near Pisa there is a small town called Lari. Besides being a lovely place on a hilltop overlooking the Pisan hills facing Volterra, surmounted by a medieval castle, Castello dei Vicari di Lari, and housing some nice churches, Lari is home to one of the most delicious spring products: the so-called “ciliegie di Lari”, a local type of cherry.
Pisa is much more than the Leaning Tower. A walk in Via San Martino is a good way to find out what the city has to offer. incredible renaissance buildings, small alleys with medieval arches and architectural features, small squares with great restaurants and bars. And there are two amazing churches, the Templar church of San Sepolcro and the huge church of San Martino.
